Women Want to be Heroes Too!
It was Christmas of 1997, and the man in my life wanted another computer game… this time it was Ultima Online. This was the game that was going to change our relationship as we knew it.
Until this point, we could have become the couple that fought over his devotion to his computer. Fortunately for both of us, he had a brilliant idea, “Why don’t you try?” And I did! From there, he built me my own computer, bought me my own copy, and introduced me to a whole new world.
We played Ultima Online for quite some time. He was pleasantly surprised at the level of my interest. We bought a house, and started a guild. It became a large part of our time together. Other couples were planning their nights out at the Opera; we were planning to raid the Orc Camp.
As time went on, life happened, our interest in UO faded, and we cancelled our accounts. At first I was hesitant to try another online game. He played EverQuest, but I didn’t. I began to miss the action, and the aspect of adventuring together. We went on to play many other MMOGs together: Asheron’s Call, Asheron’s Call II, Dark Age of Camelot, Anarchy Online, City of Heroes, Star Wars Galaxies, EverQuest II, World of Warcraft and now Lord of the Rings Online.
Now, over nine years since he introduced me to online games, we are still playing together. The games have changed, but what I get out of them hasn’t. Gaming with my husband gives us a fun outlet, a chance to meet some amazing people, an exercise in working together, and some really fond memories.
Men: Introduce her to your favorite game. We want to be heroes too!
Women: Give it a shot, if you haven’t already. You may be pleasantly surprised!
You know what they say about the couple that plays together… on second thought, I’ll leave that to your imagination!
